Undoubtedly, it is the counts of Saldaña, whose castle the ruins still survive, who fill the local history and legend. Popular literature remembers Bernardo del Carpio, son of Sancho Díaz, count of Saldaña, and Princess Ximena, sister of King Alfonso II of Asturias. The king, who was opposed to this marriage, locked up the count in a dungeon and sent his sister to a monastery.

Later, he was the head of the county of Saldaña-Carrión whose counts, according to Muslim documents, belonged to the Beni Gómez family, its first documented count being Diego Muñoz. A vassal of the kingdom of León during the 10th century, it shared its eastern border with the county of Monzón, which was finally divided between the incipient county of Castilla and the county of Saldaña-Carrión. There are documentary evidence in which the participation of the Counts of Saldaña-Carrión and Castilla in various revolts against the Leonese kingdom is affirmed, taking advantage of times of weakness during the 10th century and which led to the de facto independence of the county of Castilla.

On March 8, 1126, Queen Urraca I of León, Queen of León and daughter of Alfonso VI of León, conqueror of Toledo, died in the town of Saldaña. After her death, the queen's corpse was taken to the city of León, where she was buried in the Pantheon of Kings of San Isidoro de León.1

In 1128, Alfonso VII of Castilla, son of Urraca I of León, and Berenguela of Barcelona got married in the town, where the first documented bullfight took place. According to a chronicle of the time: "... when Alfonso VII in Saldaña married Doña Berenguela the girl, daughter of the Count of Barcelona, among other functions, there were also bullfights" .2

Saldaña was the head of more than a hundred places, the Marquis of Santillana's lordship and one of the most important training centers in the country. Ancient Gili-Zalan, later called Saldania, became famous for its struggles against Rome, whose rule was long and fruitful. It is attested by the surroundings, which are an inexhaustible archaeological lode, largely intact.
